Frequently Asked Questions
All motor vehicles using the motorways require a vignette. These include cars, motorbikes, commercial vehicles and all types of trailer. Motor vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes need a vignette if they are not already covered by the heavy goods vehicle charge (LSVA).
In Switzerland, a vignette is not necessary for all roads. Here you can find a map showing which roads do or do not require a vignette.
In cars, the vignette must be affixed on the inside of the windscreen so that it is clearly visible from the outside. It is important that it does not obstruct the driver’s view. In the case of motorbikes and trailers, the vignette should be affixed to an easily accessible part. Never attach it with adhesive tape or film so that it is easy to remove and transfer to another vehicle. You could be fined several hundred fines if the police catch you.
If the authorities stop you on the motorway and you have no vignette, you will have to pay a fine of 200 francs. You must then also purchase a valid sticker and attach it to the windscreen correctly.
In the event of windshield damage you can obtain a replacement vignette upon presentation of the windshield replacement invoice at the border crossing together with the damaged vignette.
There is no one-day pass. The only vignette is the current Swiss Vignette, valid for 14 Months (till 31st January 2021).
Yes, all Swiss vignettes are adhesive and can be affixed directly to the windscreen.
This vignette is valid between 1st December 2021 and 31st January 2023.
The best way is to use a ceramic hob scraper. It’s even easier if you warm the sticker first using a hairdryer. Any adhesive residues can be cleaned off with nail polish remover.

The vignette needs to affixed in a good visible position and on an easily accessible part of the motorcycle that is not dismantled or removable.
Yes. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen, then the vignette must be affixed on an easily accessible part which cannot be dismantled and replaced.
Yes, you are advised to do so. The authorities can fine drivers if their view is obstructed by one or more vignettes. This decision rests entirely with the officer – so it is better to remove old vignettes rather than take the risk.
A vignette already affixed to the windscreen becomes invalid when it is removed. The vignette cannot be affixed again.
